Russia is pressed on Iran by France

Posted by Atilla89 on September 19, 2007

From The Australian:

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner was expected to press Russia overnight for a tougher stance on Iran’s nuclear program after Moscow warned that military action against the Islamic republic would be catastrophic.

It would also be catastrophic if Iran got nukes…

Mr Kouchner met his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, ahead of a UN Security Council meeting on Friday that may impose new sanctions against Tehran for its controversial uranium enrichment activity.

Mr Kouchner stepped up international pressure against Iran this week, saying in a television interview: “We have to prepare for the worst, and the worst is war.”

Russia, which is building Iran’s first nuclear power plant in the southern city of Bushehr, responded with a renewed warning against attacking the Islamic republic.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said yesterday that Iran did “not take seriously” a warning from Mr Kouchner that the world should brace for war.

“We do not take these declarations seriously. Comments to the media are different to the real positions,” Mr Ahmadinejad said, his first public comments following Mr Kouchner’s rhetoric.
